Green Beret – S/T CD
Label: Sabbatical
Genre: Local, Avant-Garde
Green Beret documents an ongoing collaboration between three Melbourne based artists active in a range of contexts: Justin Fuller, Arek Gulbenkoglu and Henry Krips. This self titled work consists of two extended pieces recorded at MPS studio in 2007, hinged on deep electroacoustic explorations rich in gesture and texture. These three practitioners have been good friends for years, and despite extended periods of inactivity as a trio since the group first began in 2004 (largely the result of a mixed bag of creative involvements elsewhere, and the wonderful time consuming realities of adult life), these works bear the mark of a shared language built over time. Abrupt shifts in tone signal the application of this language, providing indication of agreed movement. At various stages these points may mark distinct tonal change, a reduction in activity (revealing the inner workings of these compositions), or an invigorating escalation in intensity. These transfers are not the core characteristic of this work however; it is an expansive assembly of concurrent electric drones that truly defines the sound of Green Beret.
