Packing in a staggering one hour and fourteen minutes of tectonic extreme metal upheaval, their seventh full length album "Cogwheel" not only represents the longest, and most imposing work in their career, but also their most defiant and visionary. Since 2015, and across six genre-defining full length releases and the spawning of countless imitators, Altarage have brilliantly and mercilessly ploughed through the barriers of convention and tradition, setting in motion one of the most revolutionary ruptures in recent death metal history, and redefining the very architecture of heaviness and of their long standing dual mandate of destruction through transformation, and transformation through destruction. "Cogwheel" reinvents this dismal trajectory once again, representing yet another rift in Altarage's enigmatic and oppressive conquest for innovation. Tempos slow down, forms sprawl, deconstruct and convulse. Abstraction and evaporating compositional frameworks expand. Echoes of Swans, Sunn O))), Scott Walker and Godflesh accrete into structural elements while lyrical themes and concepts mirror this process of rehumanization, shifting from the supernatural and the imaginary, to real, blood-pumping societal struggle that embodies the very notion of suffering and anger inside the cogwheel of transactional industry slavery. And at the center of all of this, always them: the riffs, the eternal centerpiece and engine to Altarage's tyrannical decade-long conquest. Colossal, implacable, inescapable uranium-depleted hammers of creation and destruction, demolishing and flattening everything in their wake. Conventions and their vestiges, wiped off the earth. Remnants and dogmas of tradition, flattened and pulverized under the weight of inevitability to create a new ground zero, scorched and sterilized of orthodoxy, and reseeded with the germs of innovation and expressive rebirth through the convergence of human struggle and musical destruction.

The final studio album originally released in 1996 on Kill Rock Stars, special 30th anniverary pressing! So in this sense, the classic UK doom metal DNA has already been implemented within their sonic fabric.

Projections sees Godthrymm continue to develop and broaden their sound even further, building upon the cornerstones of Distortions. Now with an expanded lineup which includes keyboardist co-vocalist Catherine Glencross, bassist Bob Crolla and new second guitarist Kris McLaughin, Projections is their most layered, varied and complex release yet, all while still upholding the colossal emotionally charged heavy doom backbone that has defined the core of the band’s sound.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/1986/0725/files/a3364390682_10_d520ba14-f995-45cb-bdd0-53e8291a6b9d.jpg?v=1793245092
hulder-verbolgen-lp
Hulder – Verbolgen LP

Answering the call of the ancestral fires and forest spirits, Hulder returns with its third full length statement Verbolgen. My bon mot was seemingly rewarded with a mailed copy, and upon receipt I luxuriated in Bill’s latest open-source leveling of rock and classical minimalist tropes, a worthy successor to A Mechanical Joey’s tautological tomfoolery. I was jazzed when a year or so later he inquired if I would be up for taking part in Louies live in New York. I wasn’t sure how familiar Bill was with my checkered history of untutored organ playing (both in Run On and solo contexts, not to mention a short-lived go at the pipe organ with Connie Burg and Haino Keiji), but he also tapped fellow guitarists/non-organists Wendy Eisenberg, Mari Rubio, and Cyrus Pireh, plus a couple of ringers (David Golightly and musical director Eli Knowles). So that’s already six organs instead of four, flanked by a full-fledged rock trio (the nimble Gumby’s Junk), a noise-tablist (Bryan Day), master percussionist William Winant, and frequent Orcutt sparring partner Chris Corsano—a veritable Orcuttstra, whose ranks exceeded the lineups of the Kingsmen and Qüeensryche put together.

With the performance scheduled as the fulcrum of a three-day weekend residency of various artists/projects on Bill’s label (which I dubbed “Palilaliapalooza”), I dutifully showed up at Roulette at noon on concert day, having carefully studied the provided staff notation, graphic scores, and recording so as to be confident I was playing the assigned single-note triplet in its properly appointed spots. Initially my part (“Louie Organ 2”) sort of hockets the original Kingsmen cha-cha-cha organ chords, and then I got to spread my knuckles and lend six to eight notes to the Reichian clusters in the rollicking second half. Much like my experiences playing in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio or the Boredoms 77 Boadrum, the parts are simple but everyone can put their own spin on them. I opted for using a weird-ass 60s Teisco organ from the venue’s keyboard backline, which truly fit the bill. There were four hours allotted for rehearsal (one per Louie, I guess) but we managed to nail it in 90 minutes. Bill begged off playing in the rehearsal so he could oversee the proceedings (and perhaps also shop for a new hoodie online).

After some downtime and enjoyable band bonding backstage, we finally traipsed upstairs and hit the downbeat. Frankly, it exceeded all expectations. The Four Louies album is well-executed but, given its plunderphonic provenance, comparatively stiff. The live Louies was a blazing and expansive wall of sound, with impeccable time-keeping by Mr. Winant on maracas. The twin drums exploded immediately, and Bill’s riffing prodded Gumby’s Junk into some boisterous interplay. In the grand tradition of Kiss Alive, Frampton Comes Alive, Live at Leeds, or When the Shit Hits the Fans, Four Louies Live eclipses its studio predeccessor, and surely portends an attendant commercial breakthrough.” — ALAN LICHT

Music in Continuous Motion, Bill Orcutt’s latest entry in his 21st-century repertoire of quartet guitar music, pointedly steps away from the cut-and-paste constructivism of Music for Four Guitars into a sonic stratum that's yearningly melodic, resolutely human, and built for performance. Conceived for a 2026 NYC concert, Music in Continuous Motion shares the concision of its predecessor -- but rather than the discrete, mechanistic precision of Music for Four Guitars, the tracks on Music in Continuous Motion unify — each song weaving four gleaming threads into the warp and weft of an evolving, complex texture that employs simple, repeating motifs to build new melodies from counterpoint itself. It accomplishes this in the most efficient manner possible: most of these 12 tracks hover around two-and-a-half minutes, each iterating first the substrate, then the melody and its variations, then slamming shut like a clockwork music box.

Based on previous recorded evidence, Orcutt is fond of boundary conditions for his studio guitar records. Much of the time, his launchpad is obvious (The Four Louies, How to Rescue Things); with others, it’s intentionally obscured. When recruiting me to write about each release, he might send me a clue (“This is a bridge pickup record more than a neck pickup record,” Orcutt helpfully offered for Music for Four Guitars). Although any given dispatch is a potential red herring, up until now, each has implied an Oulipian conceit (however obtuse) that at least somewhat determines the outcome. Thus, I was a bit surprised by his statement on Music in Continuous Motion -- “The mystery of how [the] same person, same process, same gear produces different results." When pressed, he elaborated that the record features “no triplets,” something I’ve yet to count out to determine for myself.

Whatever overarching form the recording process may have mapped out, the path of the finished album is explicitly poetic. Echoing its predecessor, the song titles, read in sequence, paint fleetingly-glimpsed forms -- but in contrast to the distant shapes described in Music For Four Guitars, the present narrative spotlights the dance of polygons momentarily grasped (and then lost) as they spin through space: “Because sharp also smooth,” “And warm to the touch,” “Now nearly gone,” “Yet always moving,” “Impossible to reach.” Ultimately, the key difference between the albums (and what places Music in Continuous Motion in the realm of poetry) is its celebration of movement over immutability, of melody over form, of music as a hot wire to the heart rather than another upped ante in an arms race of inscrutability. — TOM CARTER

After 20 years since the Fall, the Nations of the western North take arms in a clash that became the Mixton War of 1540!
